Vocabulary

After you start listening to kpop, you will hear a lot of unfamiliar words, and It's important to learn to be able to understand what’s going on. Here are some popular words used:

Bias : A bias is someone whom you like the most in a band.

Bias Wrecker : A bias wrecker is essentially someone you like in a band so much that he may be your bias, but you already have another bias. This the person who questions your bias loyalty, this is someone who “wrecks” your bias.

Aegyo : A type of behavior, it's when a person acts cute and innocent through voices, dances and facial expression as a form of flirting. It's very common in the K-World.

Oppa/ Hyung/ Unnie/ Noona : Oppa is what a female calls an older male, or sometimes used to show affection to a significant other.
A male calls an older male hyung.
Unnie is what a female would call an older female.
A male would call an older female noona.

Saranghae : Saranghae is heard very often in songs, because this means “I love you."

Dongsaeng : Younger sibling; regardless of sex, people in close relationship with the speaker are referred to as dongsaengs.

Sunbae : Senior, someone with more experience in the respective field, regardless of age.

Hoobae : Junior; someone with less experience in the respective field, regardless of age.

Maknae : The youngest member of the group.

Hwaiting : Originated from the English "fighting", this expression is widely used for encouragement and support.

Daebak : As an exclamation, daebak generally means "awesome". It's not a direct translation, but it's the meaning that is conveyed when the word is said.

Daesang & Bonsang : At music awards several artists receive Bonsangs for their outstanding achievement in music, then one of the Bonsang winners is awarded with a Daesang, the "Grand Prize".

Hallyu : 'The Korean wave' refers to the increase in popularity of South Korean media worldwide since the late 1990's.

OST : Stands for Original Sound Track. A single or album of songs created for specifically for a K-Drama.

Rookie : An actor or idol group who have just debuted in the entertainment industry. The rookie title doesn't just vanish after a year or so of working; the title will only drop once an actor or idol has achieved a certain level of success in the industry.

Selca : A selca is a self-portrait taken with a camera phone. The standard selca involves holding your cell phone angled down so you look smaller, and posing in an extremely cute way.

Trainee : Pre-debut idols who spend hours practicing and perfecting their stage skills and talents. Trainees have yet to complete the process of idolization.

Ult/Ultimate : Your #1 favorite of all.

Sasaeng : There is a recognized concern of K-pop fans turning to obsession and compulsive behaviors such as stalking and invasion of privacy.
